Nakani Co., Ltd was founded in 1966 as a dye-works, processing yukata(Japanese casual summer cotton kimono) and tenugui (cotton handcloth) using aspecial dyeing technique called chusen. In 1976 the campany installed roll-printers and started making gift tea-towels and nightwear. We expanded the business and in 2008 introduced a new factory-made brand, Nijiyura, of original chusen-dyed tenugui in addition to existing commsissioned work. These excittingly modern tenugui designs became popular and we opened 4 shops in western Japan in just three years, also distribute the product to over 200 domestic retailers.

The Katarai brand is also a traditional handicraft of Osaka Sakai. As I struggled through repeated trial-and-error trying to find a way to convey the virtues of chusen-tenugui to peoples abroad, I noticed a unique quality of the reversible cloth. When held up to the light, the rays pass through almost like a beautiful stained glass lamp. Surrounded by this warmth, I hope that Katarai can be born into the world as brand that stands for family, friendship, dreams, and love.

Hiyoshiya is a family-run business, established in Kyoto more than 100 years ago. Now in its fifth generation, Hiyoshiya is the only remaining manufacturer of traditional Japanese umbrellas in Kyoto. Our philosophy, tradition is the continuing process of innovation, reflects our mission: to create new and contemporary products using the time-honored techniques and materials developed for making our umbrellas.
